The apostle Paul wrote First Corinthians to a disciples of Jesus living in the Greek city of Corinth. Corinth was a seaport city, located on an isthmus where a great deal of trade passed. It was noted for its wealth, and for the luxurious and immoral and vicious habits of the people. It had a large mixed population of Romans, Greeks, and Jews.
The church to which Paul wrote his letter took its members from Corinthian society. Paul reminded his readers of the change that occurred in them when they became disciples of Jesus. After reciting a litany of wrong doing that can keep a person away from God, Paul said, “And this is what some of you used to be.” In another letter, Paul told the church that was in Rome that “all of us have sinned and fallen away from God,” Romans 3:23.
The good news is that God provided the solution to the failure of mankind. The word the Bible uses for God’s favor is “grace.” There are several other words which the Bible uses as well: forgiveness, salvation, regeneration, and the love of God. Each word speaks about God’s persistence in trying to rescue us from the dilemma of sin and failure. Francis Thompson wrote a now-famous poem called The Hound of Heaven which poetically describes the unfaltering pursuit of God’s love.
In the 1700’s John Newton wrote the famous song Amazing Grace. That song, more than any other, is sung at funerals, memorials, dedications, and concerts, probably because we all like the idea that God still loves us in spite of ourselves. We declare that message at LifeSpring, and we invite you to join us in our quest to follow Jesus and live like him rather than like our fallen selves.
